課程概述

This semester, students will learn a variety of speech genres on a wide range of topics: description, comparison, survey results, process, and news report. Each student will practice 2 in-class speech demonstrations before giving a formal speech at the end of the course. Students will reflect on their speech presentations through written self-reflections and in-class discussions. Students will also work collaboratively for 2 group role-play.  

課程目標
By the end of the course, students will be able to (1) outline and organize an effective speech; (2) develop practical presentation skills; (3) research on their own a topic of interest; (4) have and explain their opinions in class discussions; and (5) give a speech confidently and fluently in front of the class/public. 
課程要求
30% Activities, attitudes, and attendance: Students need to come to each class session on time and engage actively in various speaking-related activities. Your final grade will be lowered if you fail to do so.

20% Role play: In a group, students will perform 2 role play, once before Week 9 and once after it. Each worth 10% in which they incorporate "Speaking skill" and "Language development" (of their chosen Units) into the scripts. Each role play will last about 5-8 minutes. After the performance, students will present the language that they use for the class on the PowerPoint. The purpose for this assignment is to help students develop oral accuracy and performing creativity.

20% Topic presentation: Each will lead 2 individual presentations, once before Week 9 and once after it. Students will also incorporate Q & A sessions into their presentations. Each presentation will last about 20 minutes (10 min for the speech part, and another 10 min for the Q & A). The purpose for this assignment is to help students develop formal presentation skills.

15% Final speech presentation: Each student will plan and carry out 1 final speech on a topic of your own choosing. This individual presentation will take place at the end of the course. This will be a formal talk which requires you to synthesize and apply aspects of a good speech that we are studying in the course.

15% Self evaluation: Following the week after each individual presentation (a total of 3), each student will write and submit a 1 or 2 pager in which they reflect on his/her own performance. This formal report will include details of presentation preparations and evaluations.
